The Ups & Downs of Delivery

Well, I lived! We had planned to have a C-section on 2/10/10. In preparation, I had to go to the hospital the day before to get registered and have blood drawn. I am deathly afraid of blood and have passed out a number of times from blood-related incidents. I got my bracelet and went to the lab. The technician was super nice and super fast so that helped. I told him that I hated to give blood and he said that he would be more worried if I loved to give. He then said to make sure that I didn't lose my registration bracelet or I would have to re-give.

The next morning at 6:00 I walked into the hospital nervous as ever for the surgery. The nurse showed me to my room and had me change into my stylish hospital gown. I changed and laid in the bed waiting. The nurse came back in with the I.V. and asked to see my registration bracelet. I confidently held up my arm and it was no where in sight. AAAAAAAHHHHHH! I panicked and made Jon search everywhere until he found it inside my coat where it had slipped off.

The nurse attempted to put in my I.V. and it didn't work. I got woosie and started to pass out. They threw an oxygen mask at me and tried to find the baby's heart rate. When the nurse finally found the heart rate, it was beating at 68 bpm (normal is 135-165.) "Great," I thought, "This is exactly what happened with Mollee. Here we go again."

The hospital staff quickly sent me to surgery and Logan was out within 15 minutes. The doctor yelled that he was bald and Jon's first comments were that he had cute feet. I was just concentrating on breathing. What I thought felt like a 12 lb baby inside of me was actually only 6 lbs. (Maybe I did eat one too many hamburgers this pregnancy.)

Recovery was harder this time despite my research showing that a second c-section is often easier. I was in a lot of pain, my blood pressure would not stabilize for a few hours after surgery, and I was really emotional, groggy, and dizzy. We stayed in the hospital for three days and the exicitement centered around the gossip among the nurses. We were chomping at the bit to get out.

Logan was groggy from the delivery as well and lost a lot of weight while he was in the hospital, but he has since found out that he loves to eat and is a milk machine. I am finally able to wean myself from pain pills long enough to know day from night. Jon is adjusting to fatherhood and motherhood since he has had to take on the responsibility of the household (and the blog - that was a very efficient post from him) while I have been recovering. Mollee is a little jealous of her new brother but is a big helper when she can control her attitude. Patches, our cat, has had the hardest time adjusting and just sits and hisses whenever Logan is in the same room. Apparently, he doesn't like that he has fallen from last importance to, well, last importance. He thinks that he has suffered an extreme fall in the ranks.

  1. I think in theory, your second c-section is supposed to be better, but for me the anticipation for the surgery was killer. I felt like I was having a panic attick for 3 days before I went in for the surgery. Glad you are feeling better and congrats on your little guy!

  3. Well. That makes me a little more nervous about bringing in a second child. Tell Patches if he doesn't lighten up, he'll be first in importance (elsewhere).

I hope you feel happy and healthy soon. There's mail to be gotten and neighbors to be avoided. ;)
